First, the scope. Vocabu doesn't teach a whole language. A language is grammar plus vocabulary: grammar you get from school, courses, or a tutor, and Vocabu builds the other half — your vocabulary. So this methodology is about one thing done well: how words get into your memory and stay there.
Vocabu isn't built on opinions about language learning. It's built on a few well-established findings from memory research — and on honesty about what those findings can and can't promise. Here's what's under the hood.
1. The problem: you forget what you don't revisit
More than a century of research, starting with Hermann Ebbinghaus in the 1880s, shows the same thing: we forget most of what we learn, fast, unless we revisit it. Cram a list of words the night before, and most are gone within days. This isn't a personal failing. It's how memory works.
2. The answer: spaced repetition
The fix is also well established: revisit each word at increasing intervals, just before you'd forget it. Review a word today, then in a few days, then in a couple of weeks, then a month. Each well-timed review pushes the word deeper into long-term memory. Studies consistently find that spacing reviews out beats massing them together — the same total effort, far better retention.
Vocabu uses FSRS (Free Spaced Repetition Scheduler), a modern, open algorithm that predicts — per word, per person — the moment a review will do the most good, and schedules it there. As you respond, the schedule adapts to you: words you find easy come back less often, words you struggle with come back sooner.

3. Words need more than one kind of encounter
Recognizing a word on a flashcard isn't the same as being able to use it. Research on vocabulary acquisition (Paul Nation and others) suggests a word needs to be met many times, in varied contexts, before it becomes part of active language. So Vocabu doesn't just flip cards: it moves each word through different kinds of practice — seeing it, choosing it, completing it, producing it — and shows it inside example sentences built around your goal. It also gives each word extra hooks: its etymology (where it comes from), vivid memory associations, short AI-generated stories that weave your words into connected text, and a separate track for idioms — the multi-word expressions ordinary word lists ignore. Each of these is a different, research-backed way to make a word stick: deeper processing and richer context both strengthen memory.
4. Long-term and short-term memory — both at once
- Long-term memory is the FSRS engine: slow, steady, built for words that should stay for months or years.
- Short-term memory is for deadlines: a test on Friday, a task due tomorrow. Here you drill intensively, then decide whether those words graduate into the long-term schedule.
Most apps do one or the other. In real life you need both, working together: the urgent push of a deadline feeding the lasting build.
5. A few minutes at a time
This is about how you build long-term memory, not a separate mode. Short, frequent sessions lower the mental load and fit into a real day far better than long ones, and spaced reviews work best in small, regular doses anyway. So Vocabu is designed around a few focused minutes at a time, anchored to a moment you choose, feeding the long-term schedule — not hour-long grinds you'll abandon by Thursday.
6. What we can't promise
The science tells us how to build a good tool. It doesn't let us promise you'll learn — that depends on showing up, and no honest product can promise it for you. So Vocabu never tells you a word is “learned” or that you're “ready for the exam.” It tells you what you did (words met, days practiced) and leaves the claim about your knowledge to you and your real-world results. The method is strong; the work is yours.
A bit about language learning and cognitive ability (for our 60+ learners)
Research links staying mentally active — including learning a language — with maintaining cognitive ability as we age. The evidence is encouraging but mixed, and Vocabu is an educational app, not a medical product: we don't claim to prevent or treat any condition. We simply offer one of the kinder, more engaging ways to keep a curious mind working.
